Prescription for Plague

I don’t think I ever put this picture up on this site.  Last year I was at a pharmacy in town, waiting for my medicine when I looked up at the ceiling.  This pharmacy was built in 1898 and the inside is filled with intricate wood carvings.  Everything is wooden, just like it looked when it was built and there are elaborate paintings all over the ceiling.  I thought the picture on the ceiling was an odd choice.   Let’s put aside the fact that one person has snakes in their hair and the second person is terrified.  The part that got me was that you can see Death in the background.  What a lovely painting for all the sick people to stare at while they wait for their prescriptions.

Feet hurtin?

I don’t know why but this makes me laugh every time I see it on billboards in Texas.  Did he go into the foot business just so he could make that joke?  Pretty good ad though I guess.

Well, a little dry maybe…

Walking by this store in Stockholm the other day, I started thinking that they probably don’t get a lot of English-speaking tourists.  The name is a bit off-putting:

Cheap Sheep

This is the new advertising campaign for Tele2, a phone company in Sweden.  It really took me a long time to understand this commercial.  Why are they using talking sheep to sell a phone?   Then it was explained to me that with a Swedish accent, pronouncing the word “cheap” comes out as “sheep.”

Still, the talking sheep thing is really disturbing and doesn’t really make me want to buy a phone plan with them.

Pizza Hut – the experience of a lifetime

We noticed this poster at Pizza Hut yesterday.  Pizza Hut in Sweden and Pizza Hut in the U.S. have drastically different ideas about what type of restaurant it is.  It’s either that or the woman in the poster was not eating the same pizza I was. The poster translates to:

“A Taste You Never Forget

Amorous enjoyment, sensual heat (passion), taste bud jubilation, real romance, crispy desire, legendary craftsmanship.”

phut

Whereas, the Pizza Hut slogan in the U.S. reads, “Now serving pasta.”

Grammar is important

I saw this piece of graffiti at Ikea the other day.  I thought it was very responsible of the boy to correct his English.
